desert days

Sorry it has been a while since we have posted… seems like life has picked up pace between school, building community, keeping up with household things (which seems to take twice as long out here..) and meeting locals.

Here is what we have been up to:

1. Once a week at school we have a culture lesson and this week we got to take a field trip to the two forts in Buraimi. It was fun to see and to get out of the classroom!

2. I went to an engagement party with a friend! It was a fun cultural experience. We ate lots of food, listened to loud Arab music, put on perfume, drank tea/coffee, saw the woman dressed up in fancy prom-like dresses, saw the gift that the man was presenting to his soon-to-be wife… all of this was done in a big white tent. I may get to go to another one this week… I am hoping to become friends with the girl who invited us.

my friend's little girl feel asleep on my lap.. so sweet

3. Eating out. We decided that once a week we would venture out and try different restaurants around town that have family rooms – which means I can go in with Chase! Also, eating out is super cheap here- we can go out for under $10!

4. This week we went to a 4 year old birthday party at the park. I decided to make her a ballet skirt (it isn’t a tutu, because I forgot to buy tool- but I think it turned out cute nonetheless!) She loves to dance so I thought she would have fun with it. Getting the material was a fun experience because I got to do it with a local friend- she was able to get me a good price & show me where to go!

5. We bought two rugs for our house! We spent 2 hours at a rug suok (shop) last weekend a Chase finally got the guy down to a price that he was willing to pay. We just love them!

this one is in our mejelious (sitting room)

this one is in our study/american room...

6. We have a friend from the states come to visit next week so we have been getting our guest room ready and such for him. It will be fun to see someone from home & to get to do some fun tourist-y things. Also, we have one week of class left till spring break… can’t believe how fast our time here is going!

For those of you that have spring break this week- hope you have a GREAT one! Would love to hear what you are doing…

Keep the posts coming! I know it can be time consuming, but it’s such a great record and so fun to look back at (and keep people in touch!).

I’d love to see the rugs you ended up with. I bought a rug for way too much in Morocoo, then dried my clothes on it (drying rack) in Prague and the colors bled… I still have it rolled up somewhere and don’t have the heart to part with it!

    2. I just added some rug pics! 😉 thanks for the encouragement to keep posting! I do need to keep it up– it is already fun to look back at.

And so sorry about your rugs– good to know not to do that! 😉

Love all the pics, keep them coming! Especially enjoy the “artistic” one of the stairs. Photography could be another career for you…along with your hotel mgmt., scrapbooking, crafting, organizational skills, etc. Chase hit the jackpot when he fell in love with you. Love you two, bunches!
